Magical Dance

“Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm hmmm,” a voiced hummed through the fog.

“What song are you humming?” Shippo asked, perched upon the humming woman’s shoulder.

“A nursery rhyme,” the miko answered.

“Will you sing it Kagome?” a little girl walking beside her asked.

“Only if you both join me after you learn it,” she bargained.

“Okay,” both children agreed at the same time.

Clearing her voice the miko began to sing softly, “Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.”

In no time the two children were singing along with the miko as they moved through the fog. At the front of the long, slim boat, Sesshomaru stood. His face looked outward, and Kagome knew he was probably looking and listening for anything that might attack them while out on the water. Unlike any other boat she had been on this one did not move through rowing, or motor

“Um… Sesshomaru, I don’t mean to interrupt or anything,” the miko began, still intimated by the inu who had saved her from Naraku’s grasp, “but I was wondering when we were going to head to shore and make camp. I think Rin and Shippo are getting tired.”

Jaken began squawking about wrongly addressing the inu lord, but everyone seemed to ignore him. As for the dragon that usually accompanied the pack, she wasn’t really sure where he was. Rin had mentioned earlier that he was waiting for them. But Kagome didn’t want to worry about waited for an answer, though for a moment she wasn’t sure she would actually get one.

“The shores of this realm are not friendly to humans. You will sleep in the boat tonight.”

“You expect us to sleep in this cramped little space?”

Sesshomaru said nothing.

As the evening crawled into the late hours of the night, Rin and Shippo both curdle up together near the center of the boat, where the boat was wider to accommodate the two small bodies. Kagome sat near them, watching the swirls of the fog.

“Kagome,” the inu called out suddenly, “come here.”

More than a little confuse, but not willing to go against the inu’s word since she did owe him her life, and he managed to call her by name for once, Kagome made her way carefully over the children. Her balance wavered and the boat rocked, scaring her into squatting as low as possible. She then carefully inched towards the front of the boat, stopping only when she thought there might be too much weight concentrated in one area that might trigger the boat to flip over.

But the weight that pinned her to the ground was suddenly gone and as she looked around to find out the cause, she realized that arms were around her, holding her just above the water’s surface. A closer study drew the conclusion that Sesshomaru was the cause of the strangeness.

“Have you ever walked on water?” she was asked out of the blue.

“No, that is a task that defies gravity.”

“Not for this Sesshomaru,” the inu replied calmly.

To prove his point, he positioned the miko on her feet just in front of him. One arm was draped around her lower back for support while he took her hand in his. The posture reminded her of a dance stance, and as she was turned around in a circle she realized that was precisely what the inu was planning.

Gracefully Sesshomaru led Kagome over the surface of the water. The woman felt clumsy in front of the inu that value his perfect image. Worried that she would somehow fall into the water, she continued to stumble along clinging to the inu as much as possible. But as she continued to try to follow the basic steps she began to pick up the pattern of the dance and her beating heart began to calm

Without realizing it, Kagome was no longer thinking of the danger of the dance and more of the magic. Sesshomaru was a fairy tale prince and dancing on a beautiful lake in the fading fog was like a scene in a book. From that thought alone she stopped wanting to think about the why and more about taking in the impossible. Her usual attitude was to keep to schedule and think things through, but now she wanted to live in the moment.
