Victory was hers.
Kagome ran her hand once again over the smooth silken kimono, which a rich landlord had bestowed on her after she had rescued his daughter from a demon. Now she was wearing it to attend their little party on New Year’s Eve.
The reactions of her friends were flattering, but not what she had aimed for. While Inuyasha’s mouth remained slightly open, Rin and Shippo cheered, whereas Miroku carefully evaded Sango’s well-meant reminders of his promise to her. However, Kagome’s gaze was focused on her prey.
She straightened her spine and slowly walked towards Sesshomaru. No, she did not walk this time! With every ounce of elegance and grace she could muster, she glided upon the snow covered path like an elven maid with an ethereal beauty she usually did not display.
Haughtily she perceived his slightly widened eyes and the small curve on the corners of his mouth. At last, she had proven to him that she was capable of dressing in a decent manner, which wouldn’t set a bad example for his ward. No complaining about her attire, this time.
Just as she was fighting the urge to hum a victory hymn, she slipped. And with all the mundaneness of her human heritage she landed bluntly on her bottom. Cursing the frozen spot that had caused her downfall it took her some moments to notice the hand that was held out to her.
Sheepishly Kagome accepted Sesshomaru’s honorable gesture. When she was on her own clumsy feet again, she looked up at the stoic daiyoukai. Only that she did not find his usual blank expression on his handsome face. His eyes were twinkling and he did not bother to hide his smirk. That smug look clearly told her one thing.
As usual, victory was his.
