It was spring in the feudal era. Kagome rose early every morning – she loved the cool, dewy hours before the day got bright and busy. It was a good opportunity to meditate, contemplate, and observe. This morning in particular found her perched on the old well she’d jumped into so many times before. She found herself thinking over the years that had passed since she’d returned from the future.
Her life had changed a lot in eight years. She had eventually outgrown her infatuation with Inuyasha – her love had become less romantic and more affectionate as she’d matured. The brash half-demon had married a soft-spoken young woman from a neighboring village three years ago. Miroku traveled a lot, earning a living for his wife and numerous offspring by charging to perform various priestly duties. Sango usually had her hands full with the children. Kohaku had returned to the slayers’ village to start his life over and rebuild, though he visited often. Shippo was away studying with other fox demons – he often took breaks to return to his surrogate family and friends. Kaede had passed away during the previous winter. As sad as it was, she had lived an incredibly long life and died happy. She was celebrated, not mourned.
The village didn’t really need another priestess. Still, Kagome carried on in Kaede’s stead – tending wounds, preparing herbal teas for the sick, attending births. It was little trouble and it kept her busy, distracted from the deep loneliness growing in her heart.
Though she was surrounded by friends and loved ones, she had come to the conclusion that she would remain unattached for the rest of her life. She was a modern woman, a priestess, and twenty-seven years old. She’d be lucky to find a man who’d even want her. How could she ever find enough common ground and mutual attraction with someone to fall in love?
A twenty-seven year old virgin, she thought to herself. Mom would be so proud. Gazing off into the forest, Kagome allowed herself the secret pleasure of a daydream. She would find mister perfect. He would have a great personality and be incredibly attractive. She could see him in her mind’s eye. He was a head taller than her and obviously strong. He might have perfect silver hair, gorgeous golden eyes. And he absolutely would not be glaring silently at her from across the clearing.

AN: Just to clear up the timeline - this takes place eight years after Kagome chooses to return to the past in The Final Act, which was 3 years after she made her wish on the jewel. So, she was 15 when she fell down the well, almost 16 when the jewel was completed and the wish was made, 19 when she returned to the past, and is now 27 years old.
