one.
In the aftermath of the Final Battle, when the dust has settled and the blood has dried and wounds have been assessed and reassessed and deemed non-life-threatening, Kagome has a thought.
She doesn't know what makes her think of it; what makes the idea slither up into the forefront of her mind and bury itself there like that's where it's always been. She doesn't even take the time to assess where it comes from, because it doesn't really matter, in the grand scheme of things - why she thought of it means little in the face of the fact that it's a plausible solution. It could - could - work.
But convincing the rest of the group that it's a good idea is a battle she was only half expecting.
"How do we know that would be safe for you?" Sango asks.
"Perhaps we should explore other possibilities?" Miroku suggests.
"But you're supposed to make a wish!" Inuyasha insists.
"What if something goes wrong?" Shippo worries.
In the end, it's Sesshomaru who finally agrees with her. He looks from the Jewel in her hand to the determined expression on her face, and asks, "You believe this is the best solution?"
"Yes," she says, resolute.
"And if it is not?"
She shrugs. "Then I guess I'll have to live with it, won't I?"
And something in her tone must convince him; he dips his head forward, and she plans to meet him the next morning, at the stream a few minutes' walk from camp.
Going to bed that night, Kagome feels a certainty settle in her bones, and knows that she's making the right decision. After all, if the Jewel came out of her, then it only makes sense that it needs to go back into her, because that's where it belongs.
And that's where it's going to go.
