Lots of ambiguity, because I love it so much. You can read this as (unrequited) Sess/Kag if you choose. 250 words.

Smell is important to a dog. It's the way they identify things... people... places. Where we (humans) might describe a young woman as being tanned, with black hair and gray-blue eyes, an oval face and slender-but-definite curves, he---

He wasn't sure. There weren't words to put to some of those smells... Not like how it can be difficult to describe the specifics of a face without a picture, but because he hadn't known quite those smells before.

Most humans, over their individual, base scents, smelled like sweat and earth and mold, with elements of vegetables and woodsmoke and cooked meat. Sometimes they also smelled like salt water. She, instead, smelled like oils and perfumes - strange, herbal and floral concoctions mixed either with alcohol or soap or something he couldn't describe - and spices and... and...

It was... like smoke. Not smoke from wood, though, or smoke from flesh, or even the smoke of burning minerals. It was like stale air, from sealed caves where nothing had disintegrated because time had somehow been cut off with the air. And, a very little, it was like miasma.

That scent wasn't exactly nice or pleasant, but it interested him. It distinguished her. He didn't need her face, though he knew it, or her voice, though he knew it, or her name, though he knew that as well (indeed, it seemed his little brother was fond of screaming both it and insults at her at every opportunity), to know her.

He just needed the smell.
