The Forgotten Child

Legends of the Wind

by Sephirona

The rain was particularly strong that night. Harsh, pounding, unforgiving...onerous. Perhaps this rain was an omen...

That dark night, a child was left upon the steps of old Mistress Kaede. A small, crying infant, barely a few hours old. An unwanted, insignificant child...yet who knew that one day, this being, this abandoned, helpless child, would change the world...

Chapter One: The Forgotten Child

The great philosophy of many people of our time is that one individual alone cannot affect much.

Yes, an individual can be talkative, gregarious, persuasive and influential in general...but when looked upon from a larger scale, this individual is but a small, minute cell, perhaps even an atom, that resides in the great organism known as the Earth.

A great organism, infected by a horrible virus known as mankind. A parasitic virus that slowly destroys the Earth, tearing away her purity, her sustained life free from the cruel effects of human civilization...and when this virus, whether concious or unconcious of its destructive tendencies, discovers the damage that it inflicts upon the great Earth that it lives on...it may be too late. It may not even care.

This Earth is not without its protectors, however. A great race of demons, of all shapes and sizes, resides alongside the human virus, keeping it in check. Sometimes, the actions taken instinctively by these demons seem grotesque to the humans, who think nothing of the atrocities they inflict. As a result, this viral infection known as mankind is hatefully despised by the demonkind, who see themselves as the sole protectors of the Planet from this lowly virus. These demons are essentially the Blood of the Earth.

But what happens when something goes wrong? What happens when something within the blood goes foul?

A most horrible tragedy should result if the Earth is attacked from within by one of its own protectors. When one of the Blood turns on its own, others will follow. This is the beginning of a firey battle, a raging fever within the Earth that will rage on for many moons.

Yet within this chaos, a true Seer can be found. For just as evil can be found within the pure, a light can be found within the evil.

This light is known in the Legends...

...As Kagome Higurashi, the Child who was Forgotten.

So begins the paradoxical legend of an individual who shall truly change the world.

Author's Note:

Sephirona here! Thanks for reading through the first chapter of my fic! My apologies for its shortness. This is a new expedition I am setting out on, alongside my other story, An Ephemeral Fantasy. If you happen to be one of the waiting readers of that fic, don't worry! I have my other chapter written down already, waiting for revision. I just had to write this idea down first. Don't worry! I haven't forgotten about my other story! ^_^

For readers of this story, I'd like to point out the subtle reference to biological concepts in this story.

Knowledge of biology is NOT needed to enjoy this story, but it is recommended for some understanding of concepts behind it.

The Demons, or Blood of the Earth, are represented as a form of immunological defense against the evil that is mankind. I say this because a lot of the issues that are raised today are based on the harm that is caused by the destruction of habitats and the Earth by human civilization.

However, when one of the Blood turns on its own, it represents what can happen when a body develops antibodies against its own 'cells'. This becomes a very dangerous problem because the body's immune system will actually attack its own cells.

This is actually a real form of illness. Just keep in mind that much of this story is symbolic of certain things; however, the rest I leave for you to discover. There will be familiar yet strange twists in this story, and it will depend on the reader whether they enjoy these strong issues or not.

With that said, please enjoy this story to the fullest! If you do not wish to contemplate the significance behind certain concepts in the story, you can enjoy it all the same. I hope you like it!
