Fingering Moonbeams by EvilLilVixen

In The Beginning

A/N: I have decided that I have been putting off editing this thing for a LONG TIME. Not to mention, if I go over it again with a fine tooth comb...maybe I will be struck with inspiration!

Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha...but the plot is all mine!!! *laughs evilly*

Chapter 1: In the Beginning

Many years ago, youkai and humans alike roamed the earth, constantly at battles with each other. But a far more superior race also roamed the earth, but under the cover of night, a race known as vampires.

One such vampire once roamed the days as a youkai himself, a strong powerful youkai who ruled the Western Lands, feared by humans and youkai alike. But the vampire revered him and wanted his power for their selves. So they cast a powerful spell upon the Taiyoukai and turned him into an immortal vampire. He was immune to all their weakness except he would carry their curse of shunning the light.

The youkai turned vampire tried to deny what he had become. He ignored the warnings of light and the blood thirst. He was too proud to kill himself and many tried who feared his increase in power. To the newly made vampire's dismay, he was unable to be killed. Eventually the bloodlust became too much and he turned upon those closest to him. It was when he found the body of a little girl in his arms, her eyes wide and fearful, that he knew he had become a monster.

He rampaged across the lands, slaughtering all who dared to impose him and those who failed to end his life. It wasn't until a powerful group of houshis and mikos sealed him away deep beneath the earth in the heart of the country that the chaos ended. Only one of a pure heart and large ki could release him. They left the secret of his location with a shrine family, in hopes that they will forever guard the location.

This is his story...and the miko who stole his heart...

Kagome Higurashi was following in her father's footsteps. She was a forensic detective in the homicidal unit for the police department. She was known for her ability to find the tiniest piece of evidence at a murder scene, ability thanks to her miko powers. In this special unit lead by an elder miko named Kaede Goshbinko, a young woman named Sango Taijya who was trained in youkai extermination, a hentai houshi named Miroku Kazzana, and an inu hanyou named InuYasha Taisho.

Kagome was the newest member on the special unit; she was replacing another miko by the name of Kikyo who mysteriously disappeared.

"Higurashi, I need you to go down to a scene with Taisho. There is something not right about it." Kagome looked up from her paperwork to look at the elder miko.

"Hai, Kaede, we will leave right now." Kagome gave a small smile and took the file that the older woman handed her. She grabbed her coat and walked over to InuYasha's desk. Said hanyou had his feet propped up on his desk, snoozing away. Kagome rolled her eyes. She walked over...unable to resist tweaking those fuzzy white ears perched upon his mane of silver hair.

"Oy! Wench, what do you think you're doing to me?!" he demanded, jumping up from his position. Kagome had the nerve to look ashamed.

"Sorry, InuYasha. But Kaede needs us to go down to a scene." She pulled her coat on. InuYasha 'feh'd and grabbed his coat as well. They both headed out as InuYasha patted his pockets for his keys. Kagome sighed and jingled her keys before him.

"Feh, I hope you aren't one of those crazy female drivers." He grumbled as he got in the car.

"Hey! What's that suppose to mean!" Kagome demanded as she started the car. She glanced in the file and felt her heart drop. The crime scene was a little too close to her home. She frowned a bit before pulling out of the precinct parking lot.

"Feh." InuYasha answered as he snatched the file to glance it over. "They must have just gotten the call because there is not much in here."

"That's good then, the evidence will be fresher then what we are use to." Kagome said, never taking her eyes off the road.

"Feh! Better than when we get there and they've already cleaned the place! How the hell are we supposed to do our jobs when they take everything away?" Kagome didn't answer him, but she understood why he was ranting. A lot of detectives saw their unit as a waste of government money. This day and age, it was becoming harder for people to accept magic even though youkai still roamed the earth, just not as many as there use to be. She should know, her grandfather had taught her everything she knew about youkai.

"This is the place." Kagome said, turning off the engine. InuYasha just grumbled

"What are you doing here, mutt-face!" Kagome groaned as InuYasha stiffened. A wolf youkai strutted forward from the small wooded area in the park near Kagome's family shrine. If she wasn't so irritated by the youkai she probably would have said he was quite roguishly handsome. He had dark black hair pulled up in a pony tail and striking blue eyes. He wore simple khaki pants and boots with a button up blue shirt opened with a white beater underneath.

"What are you doing here, you damn wolf?" InuYasha demanded. The wolf youkai ignored him and turned to Kagome, his blue eyes widening. His eyes skimmed over her body making her feel nervous. InuYasha saw the discomfort and growled.

"And who might you be, my fallen angel?" the wolf youkai asked while grabbing Kagome's hand. She gave a slight laugh at being called an angel before trying to pry her hands away from the youkai. He had quite the grip.

"I am detective Kagome Higruashi with the special unit."

"Really? I was thinking of joining that unit myself. Can never have too many dashing youkai like myself around, if you know what I mean? I am detective Kouga Furz." The youkai now known as Kouga gave her a wink causing her to blush.

"Feh! We don't need the likes of you, mangy wolf!" InuYasha stepped in and pried him away from Kagome. She gave him a smile as a thank you before turning back to Kouga.

"Could you lead us to the crime scene, detective?" she asked.

"Anything for my woman." He said taking her by the arm and leading her the way he had come. 'Where in the world did that come from?' Kagome wondered. 'There is no way I am his woman. He is the most arrogant youkai I have ever met. I wonder if it is because he's a wolf youkai.' InuYasha continued to grumble about stupid wolves as Kagome stifled a giggle. But stopped herself in time as they came to the scene. Detectives swarmed the area around a single body that called to her ki. She took the offered gloves from Kouga with a thank you and headed over to the body.

"Do we know who she is?" InuYasha asked as he looked at the dead young woman.

"Hai, that is one Yuki Monrou. She has been missing for a couple weeks. Parents said she went out to a club and never came home." Kouga looked a little down as he gazed at the brown hair woman lying mangled on the ground.

"Age twenty..."Kagome began as her hands and eyes glowed blue as they lingered over the body, "Her body hasn't been here too long. Who ever kidnapped her had a purpose. I can barely discern something sort of like youkai ki, but it's different. I have never felt anything like it before. It's darker, more sinister."

"What the hell?!" Kouga looked on in fascination. InuYasha looked smug.

"Kagome is the best miko I have ever come across. The best part is she doesn't believe in purifying every youkai she comes across. She has this werid knack of feeling things on victims and finding the smallest piece of evidence." He wasn't too sure way he was allowing the wolf to know this, in the back of his mind, his little voice told him that what he said sounded way too smug.

"She was a miko." Kagome whispered. InuYasha's head snapped towards it before he let out a string of curses.

"Dammit! What the hell is going on?! That's the fourth one in three months!" he demanded, crouching down next to Kagome so his red shirt brushed against her coat.

"Its faint, but she defiantly had miko abilites. I am starting to think that whoever is kidnapping these young women has a purpose, and it requires miko ki. But what kind of youkai needs a miko?" Kouga demanded.

"I don't think they're youkai. It's something else. Almost like, they were a youkai and now, they're not. Does that make any sense?" Kagome looked up into his blue eyes.

"Like hell it does!" InuYasha snapped sarcastically. Kagome rolled her eyes as she motioned for the other detectives to remove the body. There was nothing more she could get from the body.

"Anything else I should know about?" Kagome asked Kouga. He pondered for a moment and then stopped the detectives. He motioned her closer and rolled the body over, pulling up the tattered remains of what was once probably a nice shirt, the three detectives peered at the victim's back. InuYasha let out a hiss.

"What the fuck?!"

"That's putting it nicely." Kouga remarked dryly. Kagome sat stunned before pulling out a digital camera and snapping some pictures. On the poor miko's back, were carvings in an odd language.

"That," InuYasha pointed "Is no ordinary language. That is ancient youkai."

"All of this is not making sense." Kagome mumbled more so to herself, though her youkai companions heard her clearly. "I need to get back to the precinct and talk to Kaede. We need to translate this immediately; it may be what we need to get some insight on these murders." InuYasha grunted but stood up and headed back to the car. Kagome said good-bye to Kouga before heading after him.

"I don't like this, Kagome." InuYasha said as he got into the car. Kagome stood still for a moment, understanding the seriousness of the situation if he used her name. She opened the driver side door of the car and got in. As she started the engine she glanced over at InuYasha.

"What don't you understand?" she asked. The hanyou ignored her and instead pulled out his cell.

"Hey, old hag," Ah, he was calling Kaede. "We've got a big problem." Kagome could barely make out her boss' voice.

"What is it, InuYasha?" he voice whispered over to Kagome as she continue to drive.

"They've returned. They're trying to resurrect the bastard."
