Past Love, Present Feelings
Chapter 1
Glimpse into the past
It was the middle of winter, the shining moon hung over the land illuminating the Western Palace. A demon with long silver hair in a high ponytail and a crescent moon on his forehead stood at the window gazing up towards the night sky. He spotted a shooting star soaring across the heavens. Feeling a pair of arms encircle his waist, turning around he found his wife, Mitsuki, looking at him with concern laced within her eyes.
"Inutaisho, come to bed. You know you have a battle coming up within a few days; you need to rest so you can be at your peak," she stated as he kissed her hand.
"I know, I was just watching the two of them," he half lied, "I have a feeling about this battle coming up. I'm concerned about our son. He still refuses to tell her and if she gets injured, there's no telling what he would do. I fear that-"
"Taisho, look the two are in the garden as we speak. Nothing is going to happen to either one of them," she said closing the curtains.
Outside a young woman sat against an apple tree, with a young man resting his head on her lap. Spotting a shooting star she smiled and poked at the man lying on her lap. Opening one of his eyes he saw the same star before closing his eyes again. Looking down at him she began laughing as he stared at her oddly.
"What pray tell do you find so funny?"
"How could I forget, the mighty Prince Sesshoumaru refuses to show his emotions to anyone. He doesn't believe in making wishes." She mocked as he sat up and growled at her.
"I do have a wish, I just find it better to make it happen on your own and control your own fate," he told her as she leaned her head on his shoulder.
Telling him he was strange, he growled at her as she closed her eyes and fell asleep. He just stared at her. Kagome was his childhood friend and the person that he could trust with anything. He would do anything for her including giving up his own life. Picking her up, he walked back inside with her cradled in his arms.
Today was the day. The battle that would end this struggle of power that had been going on millennia's before his father was even born. The battle with the lord of the north would decide who would gain control over the land between the two provinces that held untapped riches and natural resources. Sesshoumaru had awoken early in order to prepare. He stood in front of the mirror and smirked at his reflection. Exiting his room, he walked down the hall. Stopping, he knocked on Kagome's door before entering and smiled. Kagome was wearing her white kimono and then grinned when he saw what else she was wearing. Around her neck was the black chocker with the rose pendent he had given her for her sixteenth birthday this year.
"I think we might have to keep you here so you won't get kidnapped."
Kagome turned and glared at him as she walked up and smacked him upside the head. "You know I really worry about you sometimes. It must have been hard having been dropped on the head as a child."
Sesshoumaru growled as he pounced on her sending them both flying onto her bed. After pinning her down he found himself staring into her eyes. The sapphire eyes, that attracted her to him in the first place and her raven hair that was as black as night. Asking him what he was doing he got off of her and sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Sesshou, what's wrong you haven't been yourself lately; are you worried about something?" she questioned as he found her eyes full of worry and fear both which were directed at him.
He hated when she had that look, especially when it was for him. Placing his hands on top of hers she blinked in surprise. "...Kagome?"
"Yes?"
"When the battle is over today I have something that I want...no, need to tell you alright."
Tilting her head in confusion she nodded not having a clue what he was talking about. Before she had the chance to ask him, her door was kicked open by Naraku, Sesshoumaru's best male friend, who was grinning at the two like a cheshire cat. Noticing the look he had on his face Kagome threw a pillow at him as he caught it.
"Lovebirds, Inutaisho, said come downstairs for breakfast and a strategy meeting," he informed them as Kagome walked past him sticking her tongue out at him.
Chuckling, he threw the pillow back to Sesshoumaru before he left her room closing the door. The two walked down the long corridor to the dining hall. Naraku noticed the distressed look Sesshoumaru had in his eyes and busted out laughing. Turning towards him, he signed.
"You know, it's not my fault that she's so dense. I can have any woman in the kingdom that I want and I end up falling for the one that is completely ignorant towards me."
"That's what makes her adorable though. Anyway, when do you intend on telling her? She's not going to wait around forever, if you don't tell her she'll move onto someone else and I would hate to be stuck in the best friend position for the rest of my life," Naraku told him as he shrugged.
After telling him he would tell her after the battle today Naraku patted him on the back smirking at him. Reaching the dining hall the two entered to find everyone already seated waiting for them. Taking their seats the servants passed out the food. When Kagome was given her plate it had inadvertently slipped form her hand and landed on the floor. Apologizing, the messed was cleaned up as she was given another plate. Inutaisho saw that everyone was present and proceeded to tell them the plan.
He told everyone that they would move out that afternoon and head north until they reached Rose Field. It would be a suitable battlefield since it was open and the only thing that you could see for about two miles was sky and the tree lines in the distance, and since it had a 100 mile circumference there was no possibility of a sneak attack. Both lords had agreed to this and had decided that whoever won would gain control of the territory. Kagome raised her hand to ask something knocking over her glass of water in the process.
"You're just a klutz today; what is it Kagome?" he asked with a smile that told her he was laughing at her.
Rolling her eyes, she asked whether they were going to split into group or were they just going to charge as one unit. Inutaisho told her that they would all be going as a single unit since that is what he and the northern lord had agreed upon. After everyone was clear on the fact that it would just be a battle melee they finished everyone finished eating except for Kagome who left halfway through to take care of something.
The troops had been rallied and the army had set out at that afternoon. It was surprisingly cool going through the dense forest. They came upon Heavens Peak, the highest hill in the north that overlooked the Rose Field. Looking up from the field they saw the Northern Army standing on the opposite hill. Within a few seconds both armies were charging downhill at one another. Kagome was right behind Sesshoumaru as he looked back and smiled at her. The two armies collided with enormous force. The sound of metal clashed against one another, horses screeching in pain for the impact soldiers flying everywhere and lying among the flowers. Sesshoumaru kept looking at Kagome who was holding her own. Seeing a sword out of the corner of his eye he saw Naraku glaring at him.
"Stop worrying about her; she can take care of herself. If you keep being so sloppy you won't be around to tell her," he told him running of somewhere.
Seeing the son of the northern lord standing across from him, he growled. The two had hated each other since they first met as pups. The real reason though is because Koji had a thing for Kagome and that didn't sit well with Sesshoumaru at all. Noticing the smirk on Koji's face he instantly knew what he wanted. The two charged at each other with such force that the clashing of there blades emitted sparks. Neither of them was able to get an edge over the other and the battle raged on for hours. Finally, when Sesshoumaru looked out the corner of his eye he saw Kagome knocking another soldier unconscious. Taking the opportunity Koji was able to take control of his distracted state and knock his sword from his hand. Sesshoumaru fell from surprise and found himself, sitting on the ground with Koji smirking with his sword at his side.
"Looks like your not going to be there when we not only win this war ,but you'll miss seeing me tale someone very special from you," he boasted as Sesshoumaru glare at him, "don't worry I'll make sure she's well taken care of."
Koji raised his sword and prepared to end Sesshoumaru's life. Closing him eyes he waited for the impact. It never came.
The battlefield grew completely silent, much too quiet for Sesshoumaru's liking. Opening his eyes he wished that he had not. He could only stare at the scene in front of him. Standing between himself and Koji's blade was Kagome with his sword going directly through her chest. She had saved him. Koji could only stand there with shock and terror imprinted on his face. Pulling his sword from her chest she fell as he caught her. All warriors both enemy and ally were staring at the trio. Her breath shallow and her pulse slow. He was losing her, the one that had been with him through childhood, the one that had at all times had been by his side no matter what happened, the one who had promised to always be with him, the one who was dying because of him.
"You idiot, what did you do that for?! I could have taken care of myself why'd you interfere?!"
Kagome only smiled at him. "You forget, it is my duty to protect you and this land I love. You are going to become the new lord once your father passes. It is my job to make sure that that happens," she stated roughly as she began coughing up blood.
Sesshoumaru didn't know what else he could say to her. There was no way that he could save her. Then it happened. Her pulse stopped. Closing her eyes he laid her on the ground. Turning to Koji, who was still in shock, he leapt at him and proceeded to beat him. Naraku as well as Inutaisho had to eventually pry him off of Koji before he killed him because they both knew Kagome wouldn't have wanted that, it wasn't her nature to want vengeance against people. After they had calmed Sesshoumaru down, the lord of the north stated that they would officially withdraw from the war and let the west have the territory. Inutaisho glanced back at Kagome's corpse on the ground. Both motioned for their armies to pull back as Sesshoumaru picked Kagome's body off the ground. She didn't deserve to rot out in the open. Seeing lights out of the corner of his eye he saw hundreds of shooting stars flying across the heavens. It was as if the gods were sympathizing with the tragedy that had just taken place. Nodding his head he knew that if he waited eventually they would cross paths again.
