Sesshomaru sat on foot of his bed, staring at the small pile of worn pictures he had just found. He saw the warm smile of the girl he loved staring back up at him. It pained him greatly to think that she was gone.
I think you can do much better than me
After all the lies that I made you believe
The guilt kicks in and I start to see
The thought was made all the more real when he glanced again at her side of the bed.
The edge of the bed
Where your nightgown used to be
There was no nightgown, no pictures... no glasses, no watch. Nothing remained to prove that once a beautiful woman called this place home.
I told myself I won't miss you
But I remember
What it feels like beside you
Sesshomaru flopped back on the bed and pulled her pillow to his nose. The scent of her shampoo still etched in the fabric. He remembered the countless times he'd gripe about her tendency to not tie her hair back at night. He'd always complain about it getting in his face when he was sleeping. Now, all he wanted to do was bury his nose into her sakura scented hair.
I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me
He still wasn't sure how it had happened. A thousand times before he had snuck off for one of his little impromptu rendezvous, but this time she caught him. 'She...' Sesshomaru lifted a hand to wipe away the moisture that was gathering near his eyes. 'She said we needed some time apart.'
He once again looked at the small stack of photos in his hands. There were pictures of them on camping trips, at the beach... All of them were focused on Kagome. She looked so beautiful in every single picture. "It's because you took them," he remembered her once telling him. A lone tear slipped from his normally stoic eyes.
While looking through your old box of notes
I found those pictures I took
That you were looking for
"Just forget it! Forget everything!"
Sesshomaru winced, how could Kagome just tell him to forget about everything they had shared?
If there's one memory I don't want to lose
That time at the mall
You and me in the dressing room
He had tried, Lord knows, he tried.
I told myself I won't miss you
But I remember
What it feels like beside you
Everywhere he turned it seemed there was some trace of her.
Her shampoo in his shower. Her perfume next to his cologne. The wine she drank every night before coming to bed. Every night she'd taste like Pinot Noir, he was never able to drink it without thinking about her.
I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me
He pulled her pillow closer and remembered the night that changed everything between them.
Kagome had gotten off work early to celebrate the new promotion she had gotten. She would now be working directly under the head of the company and as such was allowed to take personal time whenever she wanted. Sesshomaru had never even felt her approach, he was too wrapped up in the woman who he was receiving pleasure from. Without thinking he told Kagome that maybe they should go on a break and went right back to screwing Kagura.
Another stray tear worked its way down his pained face. How could he have been so stupid?
The bed I'm lying in is getting colder
Wish I never would've said it's over
That night he had finally got her to agree to meet him. It was the first time she agreed to talk to him since she found him fucking her friend Kagura. She said she wanted to get passed all the lies. She wanted closure, he wanted forgiveness and a chance to start again.
And I can't pretend I won't think about you when I'm older
Cause we never really had our closure
"Why? Why did you have to take a cab?" Sesshomaru asked his question to the empty room. Kagome had for some reason taken a cab to meet him instead of taking the train as she normally did. Her deviation landed her in the hospital. A rather drunk driver ran a light and pinned Kagome with the car door. The doctors said it didn't look good. Sesshomaru was powerless to do anything. For the first time in millennia, he was useless to protect the one he loved.
This can't be the end
Sesshomaru rushed out of his house. He had to be there by her side, what was he thinking staying at home?
When he reached Kagome's bedside he told her
I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me
He picked up her frail hand and placed a kiss on her bruised fingers. He watched as her eyes fluttered briefly before a long steady beep filled the room. And the once great stoic Lord of the West started to cry.
