a fevered memory by Natarii
The beginning
Chapter one
Ten years ago was the defeat of Naraku, Kagome was sixteen at the time of the defeat and she had seen so much blood and death in the year of jewel shard hunting through the feudal era. Now she's twenty-six, her grandfather is very sick and living in a retirement home so that he can be properly taken care of in case something health related happens, her mother moved out of the shrine to be closer to him, he was her father and her brother Souta is twenty now and is going to college at Osaka University for a teaching degree and a minor in psychology. Now Kagome is the only one living at the shrine, she doesnt do everything that her grandfather did when he was living their but she keeps it taken care or at least she does once she gets off work. Kagome is a music producer and works for a well known music company, music was how she dealt with being thrown out of the feudal era. To her, the feudal era was more her time than the modern one was; she had no choice in the matter sadly after she had wished the jewel to be eternally gone so it could never corrupt anyone or be used as an object of evil.
"Kagome!" her boss Mamoru yelled trying to get her attention, she had headphones on and was most likely working on some music for some new upcoming band that was going to be hitting the scene.
Kagome turned around and took the headphones off to rest around her neck, "Yes Mamoru? What do you need?" she asked him giving him a look that meant she wanted to get back to work and do her thing with the music.
He looked at her sadly, "Kagome you are going to be angry when I get done talking to you so be warned." Taking a deep breath Mamoru began, "You need a break Kagome I know you are passionate about work but if you keep on going in the direction that you are you are going to over work yourself and that isn't healthy at all, so I want you to take a week or two off to fix and see what you really are doing to yourself." he said to her.
"Okay so you are having a discussion about me possibly becoming addicted to my work, you know for some places thats a good thing and Mamoru I love music listening and working with it is how I deal with everything that happens to me. Now you want to take a bit of that away from me because the way I'm going there's a possibility of me becoming overworked." she asked him glaring with her hands on her hips. "You are a hypocrite you realize that, you work much more than me even if you are running this business part of the time, I'm not the only one who needs a break Mamoru Nakamura." she told him sternly.
Mamoru chose to ignore that even if it was correct, "Kagome it's not that I don't want you to keep working but you need this, in the last five in a half years that you have been working here not once have you ever taken a day off or a sick day. I know most places praise that dear but you need to take a bit off. I'm sorry but you need to." he told her solemnly.
Kagome looked at him defiantly, "No, I refuse to do so. You may be my boss but you are not my doctor you don't know what is good for me and what isn't." she said to him glaring.
With that Mamoru gave her a dark look, "Kagome Higurashi you may be the emperor's granddaughter and I highly respect you and your family but you are not going to be coming back for two weeks and that's final. Finish what you are doing and leave; be young and free without any worries, spend time with your friends." he told her and left her where she was to go do some other business for the company.
What Kagome was just told pissed her off, she never did think that she was better than anyone just because she was the granddaughter of the current Emperor. Actually when ever there was a big fancy meeting or at least when there is a public affair and family are required to come, Kagome usually avoids those and makes sure that she is working when those are going on. To her it was just a stressful and elaborate family gathering, she loved her grandfather but some of the other family members that she has to see when those go on she is not so fond of.
When Kagome and Souta were much younger they used to go all of the time, after their father died Kagome's mother wanted them to be apart of their father's life as much as possible but soon stopped after realizing that only her husbands father and mother really loved her and her children and thought of them as family. As many people learn life isn't fair, bad things happen to good people, people are deceitful and conniving but there is no getting around that as much as people wished to it is impossible. Kagome saw how her father's side of the family treated them and did not appreciate it too much, there were a few who did treat them as family but otherwise they did not like them. Souta on the other hand was too young to understand what it was that they were doing or to why they acted so cold and impassive. Maybe them being like that was intentional and maybe it wasn't all she knew was that she never really liked them that much.
The first day of Kagome's two week ban from even stepping into her work and she was bored but thankfully she had her night job singing with her band at clubs around and in Tokyo, her boss was right she did over work herself working during the day and at night as a singer but she couldn't help it. Kagome was so used to always having something to do and being on the move from when she and the others had to look out for an attack and were always traveling looking for more shards.
So instead of sitting around and waiting for the nonexistent phone call that her boss will make begging her to come back she called her friend Yuna. "Muroshi here."
"Hey Yuna it's Kagome. Are you busy today? I was thinking of going out and having a girls day we haven't done that in months it seems." she said to her friend.
"You aren't working? Amazing." Yuna said in a fake shocked voice.
"Ha ha, Yuna I am so amused Mamoru said I can't come back for two weeks, he banned me from even setting foot in the building the bitch." she said to her.
That made her friend laugh over the phone, "Isn't bitch often used on women and not men Kag?" she asked her.
"Technically yes but he acts more like a bitch than anything so I believe it works in the contents I used it." Kagome told her and shrugged even though her friend can't see her.
"Anyways yeah lets go do something what do you want to do?" Yuna asked her. "Movie or boy scouting or what exactly?" she asked.
"I was thinking mall, dinner then go clubbing I have a gig tonight with my band." she said to her friend. "What do you say?"
"Hmm, well I haven't seen you and your band perform in a while or gone clubbing I say definite yeah for tonight, so when do you want to go to the mall? Now?" she asked Kagome.
Kagome thought a moment, "How about I meet you in the bookstore in half an hour I need to actually get dressed and out of my PJ's." she said to her. "Is that okay?"
"Yeah that's fine I'll see you in a bit." Yuna said and hung up.
Kagome's grandfather had called earlier that week and she had to call him back, he is probably wanting her to come to some public affair he always wants her to come to those things. "Akihito."
"Grandfather it's Kagome, you called earlier this week?" she asked.
"Yes, yes dear it has been much too long since we have seen or spoken to each other, but that is besides the point I wish you to come to your uncle Jiro's coronation of being the next emperor after I pass." he said to her proudly yet sadly remembering Kagome's father Taro who was supposed to take his place, sadly he died eighteen years ago.
Kagome sighed, her grandfather knew that she did not like to go to these things, "Kagome granddaughter please I beg you to come, it is in three days on Tuesday come for me please. You mother told me that you are off for the next two weeks so there is no reason why you can not come." he told her, when he wanted to her grandfather could be very sneaky.
"Fine grandfather I will be there, if I must." she said to him, she loved him dearly and knew it would mean a lot to her if she would go.
She could hear her grandfathers happiness, "Oh good, it is a very formal so please dress in the correct outfit and no you cannot wear pants. Good bye dear." she said to her and hung up.
Sighing Kagome changed out of her PJ's and into a ripped and faded pair of jeans and a grey shirt that had a purple heartagram on it with the word HIM across the front. It was one of the many bands that she loved, there's way too many bands that she simply adored to name them all. With that Kagome went and got into her car and drove onto the busy streets of Tokyo heading towards the mall where she was planning on meeting Yuna at, Yuna was a unique person she kind of reminded her of a tamed down Miroku, she was one of the most perverted girls she knew and also poisoned her mind into thinking in the sort of perverted ways once in a while.
