Never Meant to Be

Kagome staggers over the dead carcasses to her fallen love, tears streaking down her muddy face. She sees multiple fatal lacerations blanketing his arms, torso, thighs, and neck. His breaths were short and uneven as he struggled to keep his life.

This was her fault. All her fault. He was protecting her from so many strong demons for such a long period of time he had worn down and eventually got wounded. Life is just stupid. So stupid.

"How could I be so stupid? I knew that I shouldn't have pushed him to take me home. Why? Why does this always happen? Life was just starting to look up for us," she thinks as she clutches his bloody form to her chest.

She pushes the dirty hair from his face and gives a chaste kiss on his lips. She pulls back to see the shadow slowly darkening his once cold, bright, calculating eyes. She traces the contours of his face, memorizing the beauty and the softness.

"Kagome, I-I think I am dying." He raises his mutilated hand and cups her cheek.

"Sesshoumaru," she chokes back a sob. "Sesshoumaru, please, stay. Stay with me. Stay with me. I can't live without you. I love you too much," she ends in a whisper. She holds on to him tighter, hoping that her physical strength will keep him in this world. "I refuse to go on without you, Sesshoumaru. After you pass, I will surely kill myself."

With difficulty he says, "Live. You have everything to live for. Live for me. Live for you. Live for the child I left with you." He moves his claw from her cheek to stroke her belly. "Promise me you will, Kagome."

"I will. I promise," Kagome weeps into his haori.

He grabs her hand and holds it as firm as he can in his state, "Be sure to recite this at my burial:

"I lived through solitude and grief

I shut myself away from the world

A stoic façade was put in place

I longed for my heart to be unfurled

"I was fortunate to meet the right people

One of the many was you

Kagome, you melted the tips of the ice

The love you held for me was true

"I was finally at peace

I was finally saved

You gave me support

Through the worst of it I braved

"The walls of ice crashed

Revealing my raw heart

The emotional turmoil gone

I was able to get a new start

"Everything isn't as it seems

You once set me free

The illusion of happiness

Was never meant to be.

"I love you, Kagome. I love you and our child with all the breath that is left in my being."

"I love you too, Sesshoumaru. I love you too."

With the last of her words, the light leaves his eyes and his body becomes limp against hers. The great, powerful taiyoukai will never walk the earth again.
