The lake was cold, but they didn’t hesitate to drop her writhing body into it, as instructed by the witch.
She twitched and thrashed as she sank, eyes flashing open in the silt-disturbed water as her mouth opened, water filling her throat and expanding it as it slinked down into her lungs, the last of her air bubbling up, up, up.
She watched the bubbles ascend through the dark ribbons of her hair with a sort of detached wonder and a strange warmth drifted through her from her belly up her neck and along her scalp, and then down through her legs. She felt a sharp pang along her neck and her hands darted up, fingers plying along the edges of newly formed gills.
And then…she breathed.
I figured I'd do something for the Mer-May challenge - link below :) I'm considering doing a series of illustrations for the story I have in my head...or I may just write up a quick one-shot...what do you guys think???
