I think the background is perfect for this. He is, after all, the kami of trickery. I see this as the swirling mists of transition. The transition between reality as we know it and the illusion he is creating.
It is an awesome piece. Both rOo's original lineart and your coloring. I am no artist and know absolutely nothing about art or its creation, but I know what I like. And I like this.
